The University of California Commission on the Future has made a series of recommendations to the UC Board of Regents to determine the future direction of the UC. The commission recommends that the UC create institutional scholarships and financial aid opportunities for undocumented students (AB 540). This proposal, among others, will be voted on at the regents meeting in July.

Hundreds of thousands of gifted undocumented students are systematically denied the opportunity to attend college because they are deemed ineligible to receive institutional financial aid. The proposal to create aid opportunities for undocumented students in the UC system would change this.

Also, we recognize that the families of undocumented students contribute greatly to the economy and culture of California. Allowing their sons and daughters the right to a publicly funded tuition aid program is just and feasible. As one of the top levels of government, the UC could pass this proposal and thus establish the important principle that undocumented students are the peers and equals of all UC students. Obtaining institutional aid for undocumented students will be an important first step in increasing financial aid opportunities for all poor, working and middle-class students.

Students First!, Bruins United and the Defend Affirmative Action Party proudly declare unequivocal support for this proposal. We believe it is important to take a united stand on this issue, even as we all compete for the opportunity to represent students through the Undergraduate Students Association Council. Through this pledge, we unite our efforts to make the UC a model of excellence and opportunity for the nation.

Hill is the Students First! candidate for USAC president. Kumpel is the Bruins United candidate for USAC president. Valenzuela is a Defend Affirmative Action Party candidate for general representative.
