Editorial: Take part in events to benefit Haiti

By Daily Bruin Staff

Jan. 20, 2010 9:00 p.m.

This editorial board would like to express its sympathy for the earthquake victims in Haiti. On Jan. 12, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred 25 kilometers from Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

While most of us haven’t personally felt the effects of the devastating event, we have all heard updates from the news, and we are all in a position to help.

We are grateful for all of the local, national and international donors and organizations that immediately stepped up to spearhead relief and aid efforts.

Below are some events going on at UCLA this week to benefit Haiti. We highly encourage you to get involved.

Hermanos Unidos food and clothing drive

Hermanos Unidos at UCLA will be stationed on Bruin Walk all week, collecting clothing, canned food and other donations to send to Haiti. Take this opportunity to clean out your closet and donate some clothes to their relief efforts.

Karnival: A Bruin Benefit for Haiti

Friday, 5 to 7 p.m. in De Neve Plaza Rooms

According to the Facebook event page, the Office of Residential Life has partnered with UCLA Live for an evening of food, performances and cultural activities to collect donations for Partners In Health in Haiti. Every dollar raised at the event will be matched by a corporate sponsor, according to the page.

Help Haiti

Friday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. in Kaufman Theater and De Neve Plaza Rooms

A day of events including hip-hop class, yoga and more to help raise funds for Haiti relief efforts. The suggested donation is $10. Donations will go to FACE AIDS, which will match what’s given and forward the sum to Partners In Health, the largest rural health care provider in Haiti. More information at pih.org.

Spoken Word and Performance Art Benefit for Haiti

Feb. 3, 6 to 9 p.m.

Hosted by the African Activist Association at UCLA, this event is free and open to the public and will collect donations to send directly to Haiti. The location of the event will be announced on the Facebook event page.

If you can’t make it to any of those events, you can also text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross relief efforts. If we did not cover your relief event in this editorial, please feel free to post the details as a comment on our Web site,

dailybruin.com.

At UCLA, our biggest issues may be fee hikes and not being able to enroll in classes, and while that is definitely hard at times, we are all alive and we are all privileged in our own ways. While we may be sidetracked by our busy schedules and daily lives, it is important that we take the time to donate anything we can for those in Haiti.
