Symposium to discuss prematurity

The UCLA March of Dimes Collegiate Council will host a
Prematurity Awareness/Health Symposium on Thursday.

A panel of UCLA neonatologists and OB/GYN will discuss issues of
premature birth, genetic counseling and birth defects.

The symposium will take place in Kerckhoff Grand Salon from 12
to 2 p.m.

One of every eight babies in the United States is born
prematurely, resulting in sometimes prolonged stays in neonatal
intensive care units.

Testing begins for new tuberculosis vaccine

Clinical trials for a new tuberculosis vaccine have begun at the
UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.

The new vaccine, developed over a period of 10 years by UCLA
researchers, has been found to be more potent than the present
variant used for nearly a century.

Each year, eight million new cases of TB develop, resulting in
two million deaths. The disease is spread by airborne bacteria that
can affect the lungs, bone and brain.

Clinical trials are funded by the National Institute of Allergy
and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of
Health.
