Doctors evaluating separated twins’
conditions

Maria Teresa and Maria de Jesus Quiej Alvarez are undergoing
medical tests and examinations at UCLA’s Mattel
Children’s Hospital.

Doctors are evaluating their conditions to make decisions on
appropriate treatment for each of the girls, and will provide more
information today at 11 a.m. outside the hospital.

Painkillers may be cheaper arthritis
treatment

A UCLA study found that a popular class of arthritis drugs is
not as cost-effective as common painkillers in treating chronic
arthritis in an average patient.

The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on May
20, found that arthritis drugs (Coxibs) such as Vioxx and Celebrex
are not as cost-effective as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
(NSAIDs) such as Naproxen, in treating the average patient.

Coxibs offers the same pain relief, but without the
gastrointestinal problems associated with NSAIDs, according to the
study. However, researchers found that this benefit did not offset
the increased cost of using Coxibs to treat most arthritis
patients.

Campus licenses nine patents to Samsung

The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied
Sciences has licensed nine multimedia patents to Samsung
Electronics.

The patents, which were a collaboration between Samsung and UCLA
Professor John Villasenor’s Image Communications Laboratory,
cover methods in transmitting images and video using wireless
devices.

The licensing is a win-win situation for the University of
California and for Samsung, according to Emily Loughran, director
of licensing at the UCLA Office of Intellectual Property
Administration.

Giving Samsung exclusive rights to the patents will
commercialize the new technologies, and returns $10 million a year
in royalty and fee income, which is shared with the inventors,
their labs, and research programs at UCLA.
