UCLA’s Varsity 8 finishes fourth out of
21

The UCLA women’s Varsity 8 finished fourth, with a time of
16:55 at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival this Sunday, beating
out 17 other squads.

“We wanted to come out there and make a strong showing and
show them that the Bruins are here to make a statement ““
we’re here to contend basically,” varsity rower Jamila
Hammad said. “We went out there to row the best that we could
row and to give it 115 percent, and that is what we
gave.”

Just seven minutes separated UCLA and the third place LMU (16
hours, 48 minutes), who the Bruins beat the day before at the Head
of the Marina. USC (15:45) grabbed the Women’s Open Eight
title and UC Davis (16:41) snatched second place. The Bruins’
Junior Varsity 8 finished 18th (17:53).

The women’s novice 8 finished 11th against 24 other
competitors.

The Bruins’ great performance wraps up their doubleheader
weekend and the squads’ fall meets. Now they must prepare for
their spring races, which commence on March 9, 2002 against the
Long Beach State 49ers.

“We set some internal goals for ourselves, and we met them
and then went for more,” varsity rower Irene Condella said.
“We have a ways to go until our next race, but we’re
just going to keep going in that same direction to make the whole
team faster.”
