Backpacks were a big target for crooks this week, with four of
them stolen from various locations on campus.

Hardest hit was Sunset Village, with two backpacks stolen from
Covel Commons’ cafeteria. The estimated value for one of these
backpacks and its contents was $225; the other, $205. There was
also a backpack stolen from the Sunset front desk area.

Two bronze gazelle statues were stolen from the Clark Library’s
patio area. The statues were originally made in Italy.

A scale, valued at $1,884, was stolen from the Center for Health
Sciences. The scale was reported missing May 1.

A total of five parking permits were stolen this week, including
one handicapped placard. The fine for using an illegally obtained
handicapped placard is $400, on top of a $100 fine for illegally
parking in a handicapped parking space.

Three cars also had stereos stolen from them, including one that
had the passenger door lock punched with a sharp object. Police
have no suspects in these crimes.

There were four hit and run accidents reported this week, three
of which took place on Gayley Avenue. The fourth occurred at Circle
Drive and Westwood Plaza. In all of these cases, the offending
vehicle has yet to be found.

A police car had its front passenger side window smashed by an
unknown person this week. The car had been left unattended for only
a few moments.

Another car, in Lot 32, was keyed. Damage estimates are not yet
available for these crimes.
