Thumbs up/Thumbs down

Michael Jordan on a quarter? The U.S. Treasury is considering
releasing a set of 50 quarters commemorating the states – and
Illinois is thinking about putting Michael Jordan on theirs. There
are many other important people who should be considered – not a
basketball player. Schools win with budget Thumbs up to the state
budget which does not include cuts to education as expected.
Education will receive $22.1 billion and spending will rise to
$5,144 per student – up $240 from last year, but still $1,000 below
the national average. The budget for class-size reduction efforts
for kindergarten through third grade will expand by $850 million.
Keep an eye on your pets Thumbs down to pet owners who don’t keep
their pets under control. A couple weeks ago, two pit bulls
attacked a man and his small dog. The owner of the pit bulls was
charged with violating the city’s leash law and having a dog
without a license. Also last week, a snake escaped from its owner’s
house and ate an elderly woman’s Chihuahua. She is trying to get
the city to adopt stricter laws regarding pets. Weapons for city
police, not campus Thumbs down to the university police department,
which may purchase MP5 submachine guns – a weapon capable of
shooting 30 rounds without reloading. Critics have charged that the
weapons are too powerful a weapon for a university police
department. And we agree. The police chief noted that the guns were
largely for use when the campus police is called upon to help the
LAPD, and not for patrolling the campus. But the LAPD’s probably
better equipped itself, and would not need the help of the UCPD
anyway. Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down represents a majority opinion of the
