M.SOCCER:

UCLA’s spirits soar after breaking records during Sunday’s 9-0
victory By Mark Shapiro

There will be no further complaints about soccer being a
low-scoring sport in light of the UCLA men’s soccer team’s
performance in their regular season finale.

In a show of force unseen in some six years, the third-ranked
Bruins ran over, around and through a beleaguered Cal State
Sacramento squad en route to a 9-0 victory.

That’s right, 9-0.

The nine goal explosion was the most goals scored by a Bruin
team since 1990, when they defeated Loyola Marymount 9-1. The last
time that UCLA won by a nine-goal margin was in 1981.

After the game, with "Celebration" blaring in the background,
there was a certain euphoria among the UCLA team. Assistant coach
David Vanole even uttered a high-pitched shriek during a postgame
interview. "Scoring nine goals anytime is something to get excited
about. HAAAAH!"

"We should have started taking shots at our own goal," Vanole
added.

The first half gave little evidence of the coming deluge, as the
Bruins (15-3) finished the first stanza with a 1-0 lead on a Nick
Theslof penalty kick.

The second half was a story in domination as the UCLA offense
erupted for eight goals. Sophomore forward Seth George led the
charge with four goals, giving him 11 on the season, tops on the
team. Aside from posting the Bruins’ first hat trick since 1984,
George also tied Billy Thompson’s team record for goals in a game,
set in 1990.

Most impressive in this montage of records is the fact that
George, who has been the squad’s offensive spark off the bench all
season, scored all four in just one half of play.

"I felt it before the game, I just felt like running all night,"
George said. "Usually, at the beginning of the season, I was
content with one goal. Tonight I wasn’t going to be content. I was
going to keep going all night and see how many goals I could
get."

Mixed in with George’s performance was freshman forward Martin
Bruno’s first career goal, backup defender Clay Kilbarger’s first
goal of the season, and one last goal for the road for senior Caleb
Meyer, who was playing in his final regular season home game.

Sophomore midfielder Junior Gonzales added three assists on the
night, one shy of the school record.

"The team was pretty relaxed and we played with a lot of
enthusiasm," UCLA head coach Sigi Schmid said. "We looked sharper
and quicker than we have the last few weeks. We’ve talked about
seeing what we could do, playing one game a week, showing how sharp
we could be."
