Cancer Institute

sponsors Terry Fox Run

The Veteran’s Administration Park will host the Terry Fox Run
Sunday, the first to be held in Los Angeles to raise money for the
John Wayne Cancer Institute (JWCI) at St. John’s Hospital and
Health Center, organizers said.

The run is one of many fund-raising events for the institute
held throughout the year across the country and internationally.
The namesake of the run, Terry Fox, passed away in 1981 before he
could complete his 5,000 mile "Marathon of Hope" run across Canada.
A victim of bone cancer that required the amputation of his leg,
Fox’s goal brought attention to the disease and since his inspiring
feat, the run has raised more than $144 million for the institute
to continue its search for a cancer cure.

Donald Morton, medical director and president of the institute,
has received, along with researchers, worldwide acclaim for
advances in understanding and treating cancer. The institute’s
melanoma cell vaccine has been proven to prolong the lives of
terminally ill patients and JWCI surgeons have also produced
innovative surgical procedures, including the blue node technique
which identifies tumor cells in patients’ lymph nodes.

The institute, founded by the Wayne family following the actors’
death in 1981, is now known as one of the world’s foremost cancer
research and treatment centers. It is also home to the Joyce
Eisenberg Keefer Breast Center, a state-of-the-art facility
dedicated to the early detection and treatment of breast
cancer.

Sunday’s run will include a 10 km run, a 5 km fitness run/walk
and a children’s fun run, with prizes for top runners and walkers.
Activities including a festival with entertainment, celebrity
appearances, music and Expo booths commence at 7 a.m.

Businessmen named to UCLA Board of Trustees

The UCLA Foundation, the nonprofit public benefit corporation
that accepts and administers private contributions to UCLA,
recently elected Chinese businessman Thomas Tung-liang Wu and
Howard K. Lee to its Board of Trustees for 1996-97.

Wu and Lee are among the 283 distinguished members of the
national and international business and professional communities
who serve on the board as elected, honorary or ex-officio members.
The newly elected trustees were selected on the basis of commitment
to UCLA and higher education as well as leadership and prominence
in the community.

Wu received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Fu Jen
University in 1972 and his MBA from the Anderson School at UCLA in
1975.

The UCLA Foundation, which serves to forge linkages between the
university and the Southern California professional and business
communities, aims to increase awareness of UCLA through greater
understanding of its mission and achievements in teaching, and
research and public service.

Elected members serve three-year terms and work closely with
campus leaders to further UCLA’s fund-raising efforts.

Hume named dean of School of Dentistry

Wyatt R. Hume was recently appointed the new dean of the School
of Dentistry.

Hume is currently the chair of the Department of Restorative
Dentistry and acting chair of the Department of Dental Public
Health and Hygiene at UC San Francisco.

He also served as a member of the system-wide UC Planning and
Budget Committee and the System-wide President’s Task Force on
Regulatory Reform.

Hume received his bachelor of science in dentistry and bachelor
of dental surgery in 1968 and his doctorate in pharmacology in 1973
from the University of Adelaide, Australia.

In 1990, he was awarded the Doctor of Dental Science degree from
the same university for his published work.
