With leadership comes responsibility, and Kandea Mosley, a
third-year African American studies student, has many plans on how
to fulfill her duties as the newly-elected chair of the African
Student Union (ASU).

In the upcoming year, Mosley plans to expand outreach and
services to UCLA African students, and increase the retention of
African students through the Campus Retention Center. She also
wants to provide programs to educate her constituents and insure
that they are registered to vote.

Additionally, Mosley wants to continue the coalition building
established in previous years.

In order to accomplish these goals, Mosley emphasized the need
to reach out to African students on-campus early to make them aware
that an organization like Union exists. She plans to organize a
welcome week for African students, a new event to the
organization.

Also, Mosley plans to bring back past African events to the
campus. She wants to hold a major African student conference as
well as bring back the African Marketplace, a program that draws
rappers, dancers and vendors from the Los Angeles community to the
UCLA campus.

Mosley said she hopes to improve the rapport between the student
group and African American UCLA faculty and staff by opening the
lines of communication and get feedback on their events.

Through these programs, Mosley intends to fulfill the purpose of
the African Student Union and its mission "to protect, promote and
serve the interests and educational rights of the individual and
collective needs of the African American community."

With a new academic year soon to begin, Mosley and other members
of the Union have begun planning next year’s events and what is
needed to make the group a stronger organization.

"All of those things I have said so far are plans on how we want
to grow," Mosley said.

"It’s important that any organization re-evaluate their work and
bring fresh ideas."
