Students honored by alumni awards

One graduate student and three graduating seniors received the
UCLA Alumni Awards for Excellence recently.

Paul Apodaca, a doctoral student in folklore and mythology,
received the Outstanding Graduate Student Award. Apodaca was
recognized for his research on the cultural and ethnomusicological
study of the Cahuilla Bird Songs.

Founder and director of a senior-freshman program, fourth-year
life sciences student Nelly Amador was one of the recipients of the
Outstanding Senior Award.

Linda Jane Loe has a full-time career in addition to being a
student. Loe was an organizer of the Information Superhighway
Summit at UCLA in 1994.

John Sabatini, the final recipient, created his own major.
Sabatini is majoring in "Diversity, Conflict, and Resolution," and
has applied his major to campus service by serving as a charter
member of the UCLA Conflict Mediation Program.

Intel donates grant for digital media

UCLA and the Intel Corp. announced last week that Intel will
provide the university with $750,000 for research programs in new
digital media.

The money will fund breakthrough research and development in new
"content" aimed at high-performance personal computers linked by
the Internet.

Intel will fund research programs in the School of the Arts and
Architecture, the Anderson School, the School of Engineering and
Applied Science and the School of Theater, Film and Television.

Endowment to help train scientists

Providing an important boost to the training of environmental
scientists, the School of Public Health completed a fund raising
campaign for a $500,000 endowment to support the university’s
Environmental Science and Engineering Program.

The endowment will provide the program’s director with a steady
source of funds to provide scholarships and other student support,
and pursue research projects.

The endowment was seeded by a $250,000 challenge grant from the
William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The campaign was completed
with gifts from the Save the Earth Foundation and Hughes
Environmental Systems.

Students honored for public service

Three students were chosen recently to receive the Chancellor’s
Humanitarian Award.

The award recognizes service in any field, including aid to the
hungry, homeless or sick; protection of the environment; work for
the elimination of cruelty or injustice; and efforts for the
resolution of community or national conflict.

As an undergraduate, Kelly Buller, a medical student
specializing in pediatric emergency medicine, ran a homeless
shelter, and was the president and founder of Benefit for the
Homeless.

A fourth year sociology student, Andrea Meck served as a rape
crisis counselor, worked to promote a gang truce and supported
individuals going through the criminal justice system as a member
of Mothers Reclaiming Our Children.

Rose Ancheta, a third year biochemistry student, is managing
director of UCLA Project MAC, a program which provides mentoring
services to children at a temporary shelter for abused, abandoned
or neglected children.

"Community service is about providing choices and options for
the community we serve," Ancheta said. "It’s about creating social
change and eradicating the social injustices that exist in
society."

Fair to provide medical attention

Created to improve medical access to an underserved community,
the Lennox Health Fair will take place June 15.

Fair organizers, many of which are UCLA medical students, hope
that it will help the medically underserved area while providing
role-models for the children of the community.

The fair will take place at Jefferson Elementary School, from 9
a.m to 1 p.m. The school is located at 10322 London Ave. in
Lennox.
