Poor Pac-10 finish has UCLA striving to get back on trackBy

The UCLA men’s golf team hopes to rebound at the NCAA regionals
after a disappointing ninth-place finish at the Pacific 10
championships two weeks ago.
"We got off to a bad start there. I thought we’d play better,"
UCLA head coach Brad Sherfy said. "Obviously we didn’t. I can’t put
my finger on why we played bad down at the Pac-10."
Tournament play begins today at the Stanford Golf Course, and
the players know they have a burden on their shoulders.
"We really need to prove ourselves. That was not any indication
of how we can play," UCLA co-captain Mike Miller said. "I think a
lot of us are looking forward to going."
A positive for the team is the site of the tournament, where
they finished third overall a month ago, with Miller tying for
second and freshman B.J. Schlagenhauf tying for fourth.
"I like (Stanford). The golf course fits my game really well,"
Miller said. "I like going to a golf course where I played well in
the past. I feel real comfortable about that."
To reach the NCAA championships, the Bruins need to finish in
the top half of a field of 18 teams. The Bruins will probably be
seeded 12th, despite their poor performance at the Pac-10
tournament.
"I think we’re in a pretty good position in that people really
don’t expect us to go, so there’s not a lot of pressure on us,"
Sherfy said.
Even though the goal of this season is to reach the NCAA
championships, team members said they are not treating this
tournament any differently.
"We’re just trying to do what we’ve been doing all year: hit
balls, play, get ready, just talk about being patient, take one
shot at a time, and try to get the most out of your game," Sherfy
said. "Hopefully, they’ll do well. That’s all I can say basically.
I feel like they’re going to. I think some guys have some things to
prove.
"We kind of expect to go. It’s a matter of getting the job
done."
