UCLA athletes skipped after taking three straight awardsBy

Maybe the Pacific 10 Conference is tired of giving a member of
the UCLA men’s track team the award.

After owning the Pac-10 Athlete of the Week honor for the past
three weeks, no Bruin won the accolade this week. The track
distinction went to Luther Kopf of Arizona for his provisional
qualifying time of 1:48.94 in the 800-meters.

Meanwhile in men’s field, Washington’s Troy Burkholder earned
the honors for breaking the American Junior record with a throw of
238-8 in the javelin.

This week’s UCLA nominee for track was Ato Boldon. Boldon ran a
10.04 in the 100-meters. His time broke the previous UCLA-USC meet
record of 10.12 set by USC’s James Sanford in 1979.

Boldon also recorded an automatic qualifying time in his first
200 meter race of the season. The 200 meter NCAA defending champion
ran a 20.29.

Another one of Boldon’s accomplishments for the week was his
lead-off leg in the 400-meter relay team that owns the best time in
the country 39.10.

The Bruin nominee for the field category was triple jumper Mel
Moultry.

Moultry jumped a personal legal best of 50-2 1/2. The redshirt
sophomore, who had to sit out last season due to back problems that
required surgery, has become more consistent as the season has
progressed. Just two weekends ago, Moultry set a wind-aided
personal best of 50-6 1/4.

"We were real optimistic that he would come back and do real
well," said UCLA head coach Bob Larsen. "He’s a better jumper than
he was in his freshman year."

With no Bruin competing in the Pac-10 decathlon championships
this weekend at Drake Stadium, the UCLA runners will finally get a
break from competition after running in meets for six consecutive
weeks.

The Bruins hope to use this time to get in better shape and get
ready for the Pac-10 championships, which will be held at Drake
Stadium in a week and a half.

"We are going to take care of little injuries, adjust workouts
and do some polishing," Larsen said. "For the distance runners we
will go back to a little more endurance and volume they missed
competing in races."

Meanwhile, although the sprinters ran a 39.10 in the 400-meter
relay, UCLA sprints coach John Smith plans to use this week off to
improve their time and hopefully beat the school record of
38.59.

"We didn’t have flawless passes," Smith said after the USC meet.
"We’ll sharpen ourselves up and prepare ourselves mentally."

The relay team was going to run in the Occidental Invitational
this weekend. However, anchor man Gentry Bradley, who posted two
personal bests last weekend in the 100 and 200, has a touch of the
flu and will not be able to compete.

But not everyone will get the weekend off. The majority of the
throwers will be heading up to the Modesto Invitational.

There may also be one runner joining the team at Modesto. With
only two meets remaining before the NCAA championships, Avery
Anderson, who has run in a limited number of meets this season due
to various injuries and obligations, needs the races to qualify for
the championships.

The 400 meter relay team won’t run this weekend, as Gentry
Bradley has the flu.
