Hoping to tune up for the NCAA Championships just around the
corner, the UCLA women’s tennis team will compete in the Pacific 10
Championships starting this morning. Although the Bruins will be
competing as individuals, a good showing at the event will do
wonders for the team’s confidence.

There will be two different draws for the singles competition,
held at the Ojai Valley Inn. The featured Pac-10 draw consists of
the top three players from each team. Keri Phebus, the No. 2 seed,
will represent UCLA in this bracket along with Paige Yaroshuk and
Brandi Freudenberg.

Stephanie Chi, who was originally scheduled to be the third
Bruin in the Pac-10 draw, will sit out the tournament due to
tendonitis in her foot. Chi aggravated the injury against
California last Friday, and was forced to sit out against Stanford
the next day.

"The best thing for Stephanie to do right now is to rest the
foot," UCLA assistant coach Stella Sampras said. "That will make
her ready to practice and prepare for the nationals."

Chi’s absence will give Freudenberg a taste of top-caliber
competition. Although the freshman has compiled an impressive
overall record of 14-8, she has yet to play higher than No. 4 in
the singles ladder.

In the third flight of the Pac-10 Indoors, she reached the
semifinals before losing to Katherine Goldstein of Arizona.

In a first-round match this morning, Goldstein will oppose
Phebus. Freudenberg will take on Eva Jimenez of Southern
California, while fourth-seeded Yaroshuk will go up against
Katherine Costain of Washington.

"The Pac-10 draw will be a strong event with all those top
players," Sampras said. "The key to the success in the tournament,
however, is playing a lot of matches in and getting some
practice."

While Phebus, Yaroshuk and Freudenberg will be starting off the
four day event in the Pac-10 draw, teammates Anicia Mendez, Kelly
Rudolph and Jody Anglin will be competing in the invitational
bracket comprised mostly of players in the bottom half of the
lineup.

In the doubles competition, top-seeded Phebus and Yaroshuk are
pitted against Andrea Reisz and Helen Frankland of Washington
State.

"The Pac-10s is a tournament where our players can gain some
confidence before the NCAAs," Sampras said. "It’s the last
competition before the nationals, so it’s crucial."
