Candidate for External Vice President

Alberto Retana, a candidate for the external vice presidency, is
a diehard affirmative action supporter and wants to work on all
state and national issues that affect UCLA students.

"As external vice president, my job is work on all external
issues which affect students ability to get into UCLA, stay in UCLA
and graduate from UCLA," Retana said.

Retana, a Student First! member, would continue to work on
increasing financial aid, raising student awareness level through a
variety of outreach programs and defeating the California Civil
Rights Initiative, a state anti-affirmative action ballot
measure.

He would also like to hold voter registration drives on campus
during the November presidential campaign.

"I want to expand upon the work of this year’s external vice
president office so that more students are empowered," Retana said.
"We will be working closely with the United States Student
Association and the University of California Student Association on
a 15 percent fee rollback program."

Currently, Retana serves on the Board of Directors for the
United States Student Association . His experience with the vice
president’s office dates back two years; he has also served on the
Fees and Financial Aid Committee for the United California Student
Association.

Retana’s most pressing goal is to improve the quality of
education and keep the campus diverse through a variety of outreach
programs.

"I want to make education more accessible and more affordable
for all students who want to attend UCLA," Retana said.
