Tuesday, April 16, 1996Quit whining

Editor:

"We need a union! We don’t get enough benefits," moan the
pathetic so-called graduate students at UCLA. Listen up, kiddies
(an appropriate term for whiners, I believe), grad studenthood is
supposed to be a TEMPORARY state of being. What this means is that
it is a) not a career, b) Not a career and c) NOT a career.

Like being a student, you take the good, you take the bad and
you MOVE ON. If you have been in grad school for over seven years
or so, most likely you will not do real well in the outside world
and so should "look into a career in the broadcasting industry"
(trade-school pun for the slow who didn’t catch it).

Just to make my point clearer, let me state what you are not: 1)
poor, disenfranchised migrant farm workers (do not insult them by
purporting to compare yourselves to them), 2) career employees at
some labor-intensive factory or dock. What you have that a lot of
workers wish they had is a free education and living expenses, as
well as paid insurance.

So, to wrap it up, quit whining about what you haven’t got, get
on and graduate. If you haven’t been invited to become faculty,
it’s probably because you’re still wet behind the ears from not
enough real world experience and/or you don’t show promise as a
quality researcher. Either indicates that it’s time to move on,
Jack/Jill!

Strictly for grad students: Make me your write-in candidate and
I promise if I get elected, I’ll get rid of all this union noise
(noise meaning bullshit).

Oh, by the way, think about this: Where will all the money for
these new union benefits come from? Naturally from our reg fees,
i.e. our pockets! So, before you/we give these poor, whiny grad
students our support, think about what you are supporting.

Bounty of thanks

Editor:

Please extend my appreciation to the students of UCLA for their
continuing support in the fight against hunger. Every student who
added to their registration fees with the Second Harvest check-off
has contributed to the generous $5,956.50 donation. All of us
associated with the Foodbank are sincerely grateful.

The Foodbank continues in its commitment to supply surplus food
to the needy through our network of more than 750 charities. With
the help of nearly 100,000 hours of volunteer dedication, we
distributed more than 22.6 million pounds (13,800 tons) of food in
1995.

It is especially impressive that students continue to give as
the cost of education rises so dramatically, and many face their
own hardships. Our entire community benefits greatly from their
help.

On behalf of the hundreds of thousands who cannot thank them in
person for their support, please accept my personal gratitude.

Executive director
