Assault

On April 14, at approximately 7:21 p.m., a UCLA student was
allegedly assaulted by an unknown suspect in front of Ackerman
Union.

According to Sgt. James Vandenberg of the university police, the
victim was walking by the Ackerman turnaround when he was attacked
by a stranger.

Described by witnesses as a Caucasian male with a medium build,
the attacker allegedly jumped on the student from behind and began
punching and kicking him.

At this point, Vandenberg said, a nearby witness heard the
alleged victim crying for help and caught the attention of
passersby. According to Vandenberg, at that point, the attacker
"calmly disengaged and walked off."

Police arrived later on the scene but were unable to find the
alleged attacker. The student sustained significant injuries and
was rushed to the emergency room for facial lacerations, Vandenberg
said.

University police said they had no record of a suspect matching
the description of the assaulter and they have no suspects at this
time.

"It was very bizarre; there was no indication of a motive for
the attack," Vandenberg said. He added that the assailant could be
a vagrant and/or mentally ill.

"After the attack, the assailant … was very nonchalant," he
said. The West Los Angeles police division has been sent a
description of the assailant. The case is still under
investigation.

Vandalism

A suspect was caught last Wednesday on suspicion of vandalism of
several Kerckhoff Hall offices and the Dickson Art Center which
occurred last week.

The suspect, Andrew Lieberman, is a non-UCLA affiliate who has a
past history of vandalism on campus.

Lieberman, who is considered "mentally incompetent," according
to university police Sgt. James Vandenberg, is responsible for
approximately $50,000 in damage to university property over the
last six years.

Vandenberg said Lieberman is responsible for a variety of
vandalism and arson incidents over the last six years. The last
time he was arrested by university police was in 1994 when he was
caught setting fire to bulletin boards in the dorms.

Last week, Lieberman allegedly broke into several Kerckhoff Hall
offices spraying swastikas on the walls and cutting computer and
telephone wires. After allegedly vandalizing the building, police
said he filled out a Daily Bruin application, which he left in the
building, including his name and phone numbers.

Lieberman was arrested a few days later by university police
Officer Clydine Crowdell while walking around the dorms late
Wednesday night.

Lieberman, who lives with his mother in Beverly Hills, is
currently in jail awaiting judgment. The district attorney has
recommended that Lieberman be institutionalized and placed under a
UCLA lifetime restraining order, which would ban him from
campus.

Suspicious Male

On April 11, at around 8 p.m., an unknown suspect hid in a
bathroom stall in the women’s restroom on the second floor of
Kerckhoff Hall. When a woman entered an adjoining stall, the
suspect allegedly crawled under the woman’s stall to look up her
dress. The woman left and called the police, but the suspect
escaped on foot.

The suspect was described as a African American male in his late
20s with two missing front teeth.

Grand Theft

On April 12, at around noon, an unknown suspect allegedly
removed earrings from a patient in the Center for Health Sciences.
The loss was estimated at $6,000.
