Violation results in minimal damage to doors, bulletin boardsBy

Six offices in Kerckoff Hall were vandalized yesterday, causing
minimal damage to bulletin boards and doors.

Around noon, student activist group members first noticed
"racial slurs" and swastikas posted on bulletin boards and doors
next to the MEChA, Asian Pacific Coalition, African Student Union,
and Gay and Lesbian Association offices on the third, fourth and
fifth floors of Kerckoff Hall. Slogans were also found outside the
undergraduate internal and external vice presidents’ offices.

Li’l Furumoto, a member of the Asian Pacific Coalition, called
the police at 8:30 p.m. after members of the group noticed that
their office was not the only one vandalized.

"The reason we called so late was because we thought it was an
isolated incident," said coalition director Levin Sy. "But (they)
attacked all of Kerckoff."

Police arrived at the scene around 9 p.m., but refused to
comment.

The group members reported the incidents as a hate crime.

"We have been vandalized and singled out because we are a
community of color," Sy said. "The racist elements of this campus
thought that the best methods to articulate their apprehension to
our concerns is to destroy and vandalize our property."

If you have any information on the incident, call the university
police at (310) 825-1491.
