Head coach hopes senior players will continue good playBy

Although it is coming off Tuesday’s best finish of the season,
the UCLA men’s golf team won’t be basking in accomplishment as it
hits the links in Santa Cruz for the Western Intercollegiate
Tournament beginning Saturday.

In the midst of the busiest portion of their season, where they
play four events in as many weeks, the 46th-ranked Bruins are
looking to finish up strong to qualify for their first NCAA
regional appearance in three years.

"I think the team enjoys this part of the season the home
stretch," UCLA head coach Brad Sherfy said. "The college season
isn’t so strenuous anyway and playing this much should be an
advantage for us."

Despite top-10 finishes by three of the five Bruins in the
lineup last weekend, including a one-two sweep at the top of the
leaderboard, UCLA was unable to overcome poor outings by Trevor
Arts and Eddy Lee, who were unable to break 80 in any of the three
days.

"It’s just something they’ll have to work their way out of,"
Sherfy said. "They have to learn that when they don’t have their A
game, they still need to put up a B score."

UCLA will rely on Mike Miller and Eric Lohman to set the pace.
Miller, the 58th-ranked golfer in the nation, won his first
tournament of the season at the Anteater Invitational last weekend
with three subpar rounds, for a four-under 212. Lohman followed
just behind, three strokes off the pace. The Bruin seniors lead the
team in stroke average, both scoring just under 75 per round.

Freshman B.J. Schlagenhauf posted his best outing since his
fifth-place finish in the first tourney of the season, the
Minnesota Collegiate, tying for seventh with a six-over-par
222.

"If they score like they did last weekend and we have a little
help, we’ll win (at Santa Cruz)," Sherfy said.

The Bruins will rely on freshman Brandon DiTullio and junior
Darren Humphrey this weekend to provide some help in the lineup. At
the Anteater Invitational, DiTullio fired a 10-over 226 to finish
in the top-20 individually.

The tournament, featuring two-time U.S. Amateur champion Tiger
Woods of Stanford, will be televised live on ESPN over the two days
at the Pasatiempo Golf Course.
