Baseball closes in on league-leading Trojans with victoryBy
Brian Purcell

When left-hander Jim Parque is scheduled to pitch for UCLA, the
opposing team must know that its chances of winning are slim to
none. Whether or not California did in fact realize this before
Thursday’s game is unknown. What is known is that Parque won his
seventh consecutive decision with an 8-4 win over the Bears.

With the victory, the No. 10 Bruins (11-5, 20-12) moved to
within half a game of first place USC in the Six-Pac. It was the
fourth consecutive time that they have beaten the Bears (6-10,
21-18) this year, and they’ll try to continue their dominance as
they play Cal again today and Saturday.

Parque, who appeared to have his best stuff of the season,
entered the eighth inning with an 8-1 lead, having allowed only six
hits and one unearned run.

The Bears scored three runs on five hits in the eighth, however,
and still had runners on first and second base with one out when
head coach Gary Adams called on righthander Matt Klein to quell the
rally.

Klein did his job quickly and effectively, first getting Jason
Hill on a flyout to centerfielder Eric Valent, and then getting
Jonathan Petke to end the inning with a foul popup to catcher Tim
DeCinces.

The Bears would not threaten in the ninth, as Klein (0-1)
retired them to earn his first save of the season.

UCLA had taken an early lead in the game by simply pecking away
at Cal pitching with timely singles and doubles. The one big blow
of the game came from sophomore Eric Byrnes, who blasted a Keith
Evans pitch well over the left-centerfield fence in the sixth
inning.

Sophomore Troy Glaus returned to the lineup for the Bruins,
playing third base in place of Zak Ammirato, who stayed in Los
Angeles due to an injured finger. Glaus had an RBI double in the
first inning and made two sparkling defensive plays.

UCLA plays Cal again today on Cal’s Evans Field, and will send
senior Rick Heinemann (1-1 in Six-Pac) to the mound against Cal’s
ace, Jim Vorhis (2-2). Saturday’s game will also be played at 2:30
p.m., and will pit Zamora (3-0) against Cal’s Mark Miller
(0-1).
