Yellow brick road leads w. hoops to upset

The UCLA women’s basketball team stayed in the game for 20
minutes – too bad the game lasted for 40.

The Bruins were wishing they had Dorothy’s ruby shoes as its
woes on the road continued, this time losing to Washington 70-48
Thursday night in Seattle. The loss dashed UCLA’s hopes for a share
of third in the Pacific 10 Conference and killed whatever
tournament hopes that had remained.

"We were playing with such confidence going into this game with
three wins," UCLA head coach Kathy Olivier said. "But we play the
same way on the road, every game, if things don’t go our way we
just lose confidence and we struggle."

Foul trouble plagued the Bruins in both halves. The key to the
Bruin offense, point guard Erica Gomez saw limited play due to
quick fouls. With 16:39 remaining in the game, Gomez picked up her
fourth foul and Olivier had to take her out.

Free throws were the big factor in the first half. Despite the
Bruins’ 48 percent shooting, compared with Washington’s 33 percent,
the Huskies tallied 11 charity points, while the Bruins had two.
Overall, the Huskies attempted 35 free throws in the game, while
UCLA tried 14.

At the end of the half Washington led by four.

But UCLA bottomed out in the second half – connecting on only
eight baskets in the final 20 minutes on a dismal 24 percent clip
from the field. But it wasn’t until the last 11 minutes of the game
when the Huskies blew the Bruins off the court with a 27-11 run to
seal the win.

Washington was led by freshman Jamie Redd, who scored 24 points,
half of which came from the free throw line.

Meanwhile, Gomez scored a team-high 12 points in only 25 minutes
of play and junior Nickey Hilbert contributed 11 points.

"The bottom line is we didn’t execute," Olivier said. "We turned
the ball over 33 times. We didn’t have a leader, and for us to be a
good basketball team we have to find a consistent leader and we
need to win some games on the road."

The Bruins will have one last chance for redemption Saturday at
Pullman as UCLA hopes to end the regular season the way it started
it–with a win against Washington State.

"It is very important for me for the seniors to out in style,"
Olivier said.
