Althouse breaks own record twice

Valeyta Althouse’s only competition these days seems to be
herself.

The senior shot putter was at the Los Angeles Invitational at
the Sports Arena this weekend , where she broke her own collegiate
record of 59-0 feet not once, but twice.

After throwing 58-10 on her second attempt, Althouse sent her
third shot 59-11Ž2 to break the record she set just two weeks
prior in Lincoln, Neb. But she wasn’t finished.

On her fourth attempt, Althouse broke the record again with a
throw of 59-31Ž2 to handily win the competition. Second to
Althouse was former Bruin Dawn Dumble, competing for Reebok. UCLA’s
Nada Kawar (51-71Ž4) and Rachelle Noble (51-01Ž4)
finished in the third and fourth positions.

The men enjoyed relative success at the L.A. Invite also. In the
shot, UCLA’s Mark Parlin finished third with a mark of 64-2 while
fellow Bruins Jonathon Ogden (60-01Ž4), Travis Haynes
(60-01Ž4) and Wade Tift (57-101Ž2) finished fourth
through sixth, respectively.

The event was won by last year’s NCAA champion and former Bruin
John Godina (69-8) while world record holder Randy Barnes was
second (68-73Ž4). In the pole vault, UCLA’s Scott Slover tied
for second place with a mark of 18-01Ž2, bettering his
previous season-best of 17-81Ž2.

With the NCAA Indoor Championships less than two weeks away,
last weekend was a good chance for the throwers to see where they
stand among national competition. Currently, Parlin ranks second in
the NCAA in the shot, while Slover is third in the pole vault.
