W. tennis clobbers Irvine Anteaters in 7-0 win Thursday

It was supposed to simulate the intense competition that will
gather at the National Team Indoors in one week, but Thursday
afternoon’s match between the UCLA women’s tennis team and UC
Irvine turned out to exhibit no such intensity.

Hoping to get a taste of the highly anticipated tournament, the
Bruins (4-1 overall, 2-1 in Pacific 10) hosted the Anteaters at the
Sunset Courts with a dual match format that will be used next week.
But as it turned out, UCLA encountered very little resistance from
UC Irvine and cruised to a casual 7-0 victory.

"I told the girls to take these matches very seriously and try
to execute some new things that they have been working on in
practice," UCLA assistant coach Stella Sampras said. "I told them
to come in behind the serves and they all did that."

Paige Yaroshuk, who is recovering from a stomach pull, showed no
ill effects of the injury against Patty Villaroman at the No. 2
spot. Yaroshuk overpowered the Anteater freshman in route to a 6-0,
6-0 win. She also teamed up with Keri Phebus to garner a 8-1 win at
the No. 1 doubles.

"I think she was going half speed on her serves," Sampras said.
"We just want her to stay healthy and be ready for the
Nationals."

With UCI out of the way, the seventh-ranked Bruins must turn
their attention to the big challenge that awaits them this weekend.
Prior to the big showdown against Pepperdine at the pristine
setting of Malibu on Saturday at 1 p.m., UCLA has a date with
Nevada Las Vegas at the Sunset Courts this afternoon at 1:30
p.m.

At best, the No. 35 Running Rebels pose a minor threat to the
Bruins’ undefeated home record, but Pepperdine is a different
story.

"We’re trying to get used to playing better teams," Sampras
said. "And Pepperdine will definitely be one of them."Comments to
