Softball heads out for pair of doubleheaders

The UCLA softball team returns to action this weekend, traveling
to Northern California to take on Santa Clara and Pacific in a pair
of nonconference doubleheaders.

After suffering their first loss of the young season last week
at the hands of California, the Bruins battled back to sweep a
doubleheader from UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 13, to get back on the
winning note and improve to 7-1 on the year.

UCLA will try to extend its winning streak on Saturday, when it
battles the Broncos from Santa Clara (3-5). The all-time series
between the two clubs is relatively brief, with the teams clashing
only five times. In their last meeting two years ago, the Bruins
swept a doubleheader from the Broncos by scores of 8-0 and 7-0.

But the Broncos should be much improved over the past couple of
years. They return 11 letter-winners and all nine starters from a
team that finished 22-38 a year ago, including pitching standout
Jessica Accord and senior first baseman Leslie Griffin. The Bruins
come into the game as heavy favorites, but they know they can’t
take anything for granted.

"It was nice to see us come strong in the second game (against
UCSB), but we came out kind of flat in the first game, we need to
learn to play 14 innings of solid softball – not just seven," said
Sue Enquist, co-head coach.

The weekend will conclude with a doubleheader in Stockton
against Pacific. The Tigers return six starters from a team that
finished 17-35 last season. UCLA will have to contend with pitcher
Brandee MacArthur, who shut out Santa Clara through seven innings
in Pacific’s (2-0) opener.

But the defending national champions will be able to counteract
with an especially productive lineup of late. Sophomore utility
player Kim Wuest already amassed five home runs while freshman
Julie Marshall leads the club with a .600 batting average.Comments
