The UCLA baseball team put up some weird and wacky numbers
during its five-game stint in Hawaii which ended this weekend.
Among them:
UCLA has won six out of its last seven games, raising its record
to 6-3, three games over .500 …
Nick Theodorou filled the designated hitter spot in fine
fashion, going 7-for-16 in the Aloha state. Theodorou also leads
the Bruins in walks this year with 11 …
UCLA’s nominee for Six-Pac player of the week is pitcher Dan
Keller. The freshman right-hander pitched six and two-thirds
innings in two appearances last week, earning a win in UCLA’s 12-4
defeat of Hawaii on Saturday. Keller gave up no runs and just two
hits over both appearances …
Going into Hawaii without a hit this season, sophomore Brett
Nista went 8-for-19 with seven RBIs, raising his average to .296
…
Senior Zak Ammirato might be the Bruins’ most disciplined player
– offensively and defensively. In all five games in Hawaii,
Ammirato reached base safely and has done so in each of UCLA’s nine
contests this year.
Dating back to last season, Ammirato has a base hit or a
base-on-balls in the past 28 consecutive games. In addition,
Ammirato is the only member of the UCLA infield yet to record an
error in the 1996 campaign …
Pitcher Jim Parque struck out eight batters over six innings in
the Bruins’ only defeat of the week, a 10-inning, 10-9 loss to
Hawaii on Friday.
Though they out-hit the opposition in every circumstance, the
Bruins’ defense at Hawaii-Hilo left something to be desired. The
Bruins booted, bobbled, muffed and missed a total of 10 balls for
