Baseball wants wins, not r&r in Hawaii

Bruins strive to keep winning streak alive in five-game
series

While most UCLA students are spending their week holed up in a
library or sitting in front of a computer, the Bruin baseball team
will be basking in the Hawaii sun.

Well, not exactly basking. They will play five important games
in five days while they are there. This, plus hotel room midterms
will make for a less than dreamlike Hawaiian vacation.

This doesn’t mean that they aren’t looking forward to their
six-day stay. The team is on a two-game roll, and looks to continue
it.

"We’re going there to accomplish some wins," said UCLA assistant
coach Vince Beringhele. "Of course, we’ll let the players enjoy
Hawaii, but the point of the trip is to win five ballgames. We have
to make sure that they don’t get too distracted."

UCLA will play the University of Hawaii-Hilo on Wednesday and
Thursday, then will receive a tougher test when they play Hawaii in
a three-game weekend set.

Hawaii-Hilo appears to be one of the very few cream puffs on
UCLA’s schedule, so the Bruins are looking to fatten up on the 4-8
Vulcans.

"We’re not going to overlook Hilo, but we expect to go out there
and hammer them," said junior pitcher Nick St. George. "We would be
disappointed if we didn’t beat them easily."

Freshman Dan Keller and sophomore UC Santa Barbara transfer Matt
Klein are the probable starters for UCLA against Hawaii-Hilo. It
would be the first career UCLA start for both pitchers.

This is only Hilo’s second season as a Division I program. They
managed a 21-26-1 record last year, but lost seven starters to
graduation.

Troy Glaus and the UCLA baseball team (2-2) begin a swing
through Hawaii this week.
