Beasley withdraws appeal

Efforts to extend initiative voting drop, status stands

Graduate Students Association President Tim Beasley withdrew an
appeal yesterday concerning last week’s graduate student government
election results, citing time constraints.

The appeal was submitted to the Allen Stout, the commissioner of
elections and appointments, last Thursday asking for one more day
of balloting to help pass two initiatives on the grad ballot, one
of which asked for a membership fee increase.

"GSA needs the money," Beasley said. "But I don’t feel like
dealing with the hassle (of appealing) I don’t have the
time."

As part of the appeal process, Beasley would need to address the
elections board and argue his case. If the matter was not resolved
there, the appeal would go to the GSA forum which meets this
Thursday.

The second initiative asked that a new GSA departmental council
be added to the existing 11. Although the ballot items won a
majority of the 815 votes, they failed to meet the 10 percent voter
turnout required by the GSA constitution. The ballots from a third
day of voting would have been added to the total from the original
election.

Stout was unavailable for comment.
