M. golf takes sixth at Pac-10s
Bock leads Bruins with 10th-place finish at tourney

In a Pacific-10 Championship tournament that showcased some of
the best golf teams in the country, the UCLA men’s golf team
finished a respectable sixth at Richland, Wash., on Wednesday
afternoon.
The Bruins, who have been consistently finishing out of the
top-10 in recent tournaments, came out to the Meadow Springs
Country Club on Monday with a mediocre effort.
In rounds one and two, which were played on Monday, the Bruins
posted scores of 368 and 369. That performance placed UCLA in
seventh place, 27 strokes behind the leader Arizona State and only
five strokes better than last place Washington.
Tuesday’s third round score of 387 was poor, but in comparison
with the scores of other schools, the Bruins did a little better.
On a day when ASU’s 374 was the best mark, UCLA’s 387 was good
enough for sixth. It also moved the Bruins past Oregon State for
the sixth place standing.
In the fourth and final round of the tournament on Wednesday,
the Bruins posted a score of 365, their best single-day score.
Wednesday’s performance insured the Bruins the sixth-place finish
and gave them a shot at Oregon  which was sitting in fifth
place. Oregon held off the Bruins with a three-stroke margin but
had to do it with a lethargic fourth- round performance of 371.
Individually, Brian Bock led the Bruins with a 10th-place
finish. The senior from Lincoln, Neb., posted a three-day score of
292. Trevor Arts, added to the starting lineup to accommodate the
tournament’s unorthodox six-golfer format, finished second on the
team and 20th on the leader board. Arts ended the tournament with a
score of 297.
Eric Lohman, UCLA’s top golfer, had a disappointing tournament.
With a three-day score of 298, the junior finished 25th overall.
Only a week ago, Lohman was on the verge of winning the U.S.
Intercollegiates before finishing in a stellar third place.
Compared to last week’s scoring average of 70 strokes per round,
Lohman’s 74.5 strokes per round were disappointing at best.
Lance Graville also struggled at Richland and finished the
tournament with a score of 309. Graville, who had the top mark for
the Bruins on two different occasions this season, finished in 53rd
place.

Without the services of their best golfer Tiger Woods, Stanford
struggled through the entire tournament before finishing
eighth.
Woods, who was injured at the U.S. Intercollegiates last
weekend, had to sit out the Pac-10 Championships to rest his ailing
shoulder. Even without Woods, No. 2 Stanford pulled out an
impressive win last weekend, but the Pac-10 Championships were
another story for the Cardinal.
Stanford’s top two finishers were William Yanagisawa (sixth
place) and Jerry Chang (25th place). As a team, the Cardinal shot
54 strokes over-par at Meadow Springs, while only a week ago at the
U.S. Intercollegiates, the Cardinal finished 11 strokes
under-par.
