Roxane Marquez elected as Daily Bruin editor

Roxane Marquez, a fourth-year English/American Studies major,
was elected the 1995-96 editor in chief of the Daily Bruin last
night.
The decision was announced yesterday by the student
association’s Communications Board, which oversees and monitors
student media.
As part of the editor in chief’s duties, Marquez will guide
community relations, supervise members of the staff and ensure
quality coverage in all areas of the paper.
Marquez has worked for The Bruin both as a writer and an editor.
She was a news reporter for more than six months in 1993, and has
been assistant viewpoint editor since September. Marquez received
the endorsement of the Daily Bruin staff on Monday.
Marquez said she has many goals for the future of The Bruin both
within the staff as well as the composition and presentation of the
paper.
"I think part of the reason readership is declining is due to
competition with more dynamic media," Marquez said. "I really see
color as an important medium. I want to begin the transition to
color. I don’t foresee an entire paper in color in the near future,
but I do see it as a goal over the next few years."
Marquez also said she hopes to expand the range of topics
covered in The Bruin. She also added that she wanted to foster a
greater sense of camaraderie within The Bruin staff, and move
toward making the Daily Bruin experience one that can lead to
success in the job market.
The other candidate for the position, Phillip Carter, said that
despite not being elected, he is nonetheless looking forward to
continuing his work for the Daily Bruin.
"I’m glad this process is over, but I can’t wait to work on The
Bruin next year in some capacity," Carter said.
Communications Board Chair Jason Stewart said he was very
pleased with the qualifications of both candidates.
"We are very excited about both applicants," he said.
Stewart said he thought that Marquez’ experience in both writing
and management would serve her well as the new editor in chief.
"My opinion is that Roxane’s background in News and Viewpoint,
and her interaction with departments … show us her ability to
take on a position of leadership in all areas," Stewart said.
Matea Gold, the 1994-95 editor in chief, expressed her respect
for both candidates, and said she is enthusiastic about Marquez’s
plans for the paper.
"I’m really impressed with both candidates. I know that Roxane
is going to be outstanding next year," Gold said. "I know that
she’s had great experience at The Bruin that will enable her to
take it to new heights."
Marquez will assume the role of editor in chief in June, in time
to edit the last issue of the year.
